So what makes Siena so special?
Easily said, Siena is one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Italy. The famous Piazza del Campo, with its shell shape, is famous not only for its beauty but also for the Palio that takes place every year in the city.
This is a horse race between the contrade (neighbourhoods) of ancient origin.
The best way to admire the square is to climb the 88-metre-high Torre del Mangia: the view from the tower, which overlooks the square, is spectacular. Not advisable for those who suffer from vertigo!
Also facing the square is the Palazzo Pubblico, flanked by ancient palaces.
Inside the Palazzo Pubblico you will find the Museo Civico di Siena, which houses the famous frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
Also worth a visit is the imposing Duomo, adorned with a floor covered in esoteric and religious symbols. The Piccolomini Library and the Piccolomini Chapel, where Michelangelo sculpted four statues in the lower niches, are also located here.
Behind the Duomo is the Baptistery, famous for its Baptismal Font, made of bronze and marble and placed in the centre of the Baptistery.
